Update on My Project...

Hi guys,

This is an update on my project ideas... any thoughts, please do let me know!!!

Thanks!

LB

I have decided to investigate the affect Continued Professional Development (CPD) has on actors in the film industry. I will investigate my hypothesis that most actors in America do CPD whereas most actors in England do not, and that is why American actors are more successful. I will measure success by the number of awards won. I will interview casting directors and acting coaches to discover their views on whether CPD makes actors more successful. I will also ask professional actors to fill out questionnaires on the topic. I will research into which acting techniques are most popular with the most successful actors of our time, and then study this technique to use when performing a monologue for my show reel.

Journal Entry Number 3

Over the past two weeks I have managed to structure my ideas and begin writing my proposal. Writing down my ideas in this way has enabled me to refine the details of what exactly I am investigating. This then enabled me to choose the most suitable research methods for the project. Using a variety of books and internet resources in addition to what I have been taught at the Campus Sessions, I have made informed decisions as to which methods will be most appropriate to use and I feel confident with my choices.

I have learnt so much with regards to planning a project. What I have found the most challenging is finding secondary research for my project. I am continually looking for relevant articles and any journals I can find on the subject area.

Please let me know your thoughts on my research topic idea!

Thanks

My Research Project!

A study to show what impact Continuous Professional Development and in particular, acting coaching has on high profile/Oscar winning actors.

In order to do this I intend to research:

Why American actors continue to study throughout their career after having trained at drama school whereas many English actors do not.

With whom Oscar winning actors of the past decade trained and what techniques they used.

What acting coaches teach.

What effect cultural differences have on actors living in LA compared to actors living in London.

Please let me know if you are an actor and trained in London. Also, has anyone lived and trained in LA?

Activity 1

Discourse Analysis – uses qualitative analysis of interactive speech, assuming that the subject has used words to explain their views in context of personal life experience. Used when researchers want to find out about the subject’s own personal experiences of something, as opposed to an example of something which they can merely relate to.

Semi Structured Interview – an interview in which the questions have some form of structure but also allow for freedom in the response. This often brings about relevant points which may have been omitted in a closed question interview. The interviewer can then follow up on these points if desired.

Journal Entry Number 2

The campus session on 03/03/2010 was extremely informative and gave me a detailed insight into planning a research project, including the different types of research methods available.

Prior to the session I had a tutorial to discuss my project ideas face-to-face with my tutor. The one aspect of this course I struggle with is not being able to discuss ideas in person with my peers and tutors as regularly as I would like. Personally I find it easiest to identify problems and come up with new ideas by voicing my thoughts out loud, as opposed to writing them down.

After the first campus session on 16/02/2010 I realised I needed to expand my ideas for research topics by first thinking creatively rather than practically. This meant undertaking extensive secondary research in order to know which of my ideas would best develop into a research project followed by thinking about the practicalities of carrying out primary research into that topic.

I brainstormed numerous ideas for both the topics I am particularly interested in - acting techniques and Oscar winning actors. Whilst discussing ideas regarding these topics I realised they encompass the same one topic – continuous professional learning for actors – and so this is the angle I intend my research project to take.

I will detail my ideas on the blog, enabling me to engage in discussions with other people in the entertainment industry who will also look at the project from an academic point of view. It will hopefully prove both useful and insightful to have the opinions of my peers as this would then give me the potential to structure a debate on the subject as well as providing primary research for the project.
