A study to show what impact Continuous Professional Development and in particular, acting coaching has on high profile/Oscar winning actors.
In order to do this I intend to research:
Why American actors continue to study throughout their career after having trained at drama school whereas many English actors do not.
With whom Oscar winning actors of the past decade trained and what techniques they used.
What acting coaches teach.
What effect cultural differences have on actors living in LA compared to actors living in London.
Please let me know if you are an actor and trained in London. Also, has anyone lived and trained in LA?

ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a great idea! I wasn't aware that Americans continued their training so that was interesting! I can imagine that this is definitely an original topic so I think you have made a great decision. I don't know of anyone who is an actor or who has trained in LA i'm sorry but I definitely think it is a good idea to ask 'young' actors or 'budding' actors for their opinion as this will obviously have answers to why Brits don't continue their training. I think you'll find the Oscar winners on the internet with ease. Maybe you could contact (call) some of the LA acting schools and record the conversation if they don't object as you could use it as part of your research as either a discussion or interview- depending how you arrange it. This could be expensive but something to consider.

ReplyDeleteI also didn't know that Americans continued their training. I know some people who are British and have gone to LA to pursue acting careers, so I don't know if this is of any use. I think this i s a good idea, and most likely something that hasn't been looked at in depth before. You could do surveys of British actors to find out why they don't continue training.
I will shortly be putting up my final idea, I suddenly had doubts on my idea note the delay!x

It is so interesting that neither of you knew that actors in America continue with their training. It confirms what i thought - that there is a big difference between actors CPD in England and in LA - so hopefully it will be a worthwhile and interesting topic!
I will definitely be interviewing acting coaches in LA Sophie - i agree that it will provide me with some invaluable information.
Lucy, if you could let me know anyone who has moved to LA who went to drama school in England, that would be great as I will be sending questionnaires to people in that category- thanks!
