Harvard citing - please help!

Hi Guys,

Does anyone know if we have been given a standard way of referencing websites in our text?

I thought it was (AUTHOR, DATE, WEBSITE ADDDRESS)

However some people and some websites have said to write ONLINE or ONLINE REFERENCE instead of the website address.

Thanks

References with regard to word count

Hi guys,

I am told that references in Chapters 1-6 are not included in the word count.

Does this mean the whole quote of the reference cited in the chapter? Or does it just mean the cititaion is not included in the word count, ie the bit in brackets?

Thanks

Learning Across the BAPP Course

Throughout the course I have gained knowledge in a variety of areas from increasing my knowledge and confidence on working with numerous computer programmes and applications, such as Delicious, Google Docs and learning how to blog; to developing my academic writing skills; to developing my researching skills and carrying out an investigation.

The first thing I learnt on the BAPP course was how to set up my own blog and how to interact with other people’s blogs. Having never used a blog before this was a somewhat daunting task. However it has opened my eyes to a whole new way of interacting with others and of marketing myself.

The first module on the course was designed to make us think about ourselves what we are good at and what skills we lack. I found this most useful in guiding me towards ideas for my final project. I had numerous ideas, but due to the small scale of the investigation, I had to think logically as to which ideas would be most practical and achievable under the given time limitations.

The thought processes which led to the final idea being selected were long and challenging. However, from this process I learnt much about how to eliminate or adapt initial ideas efficiently, effectively and logically.

It is through writing the proposal, conducting the investigation and writing up the final report that I feel I have learnt the most from this course. The project has enabled me to improve my:
- reading skills
- researching skills
- interview technique
- academic writing skills
- critical thinking skills
- general project planning and development techniques

My investigation is a Work Based Learning project based on social world research. Through the investigation I have developed an understanding and appreciation of research projects and, in particular, for social world research. My knowledge of practitioners and research methods has also developed and I feel this will aid me in approaching future research in a more critical and reflective way.

One of the main findings of my investigation was how to become more employable as an actor. I intend to utilise this information to become more employable and to move my career forward from here. Another major benefit I have gained through doing this course and this investigation is the benefit of keeping a Learning Journal.

Using a Learning Journal is something which I intend to continue throughout my career. It enables me to record my experiences and ideas and moreover to reflect on them critically. I envisage that keeping another Learning Journal, after this project is completed, will help me to more forward with my career in a practical and effective way.

Due to the nature of the course, little personal interaction has been required between students. I feel this was a shame and that I could have learnt more from my peers had there been the opportunity. Perhaps we could have interacted more on the blogs, but as so many people were new to blogging, I think many felt uneasy interacting in this way.

I feel a great sense of accomplishment as I near to the end of this course and I feel proud of what I have achieved.

Main Project Findings

Through my investigation to discover differences in attitudes towards CPD for actors in London and LA, I have come to the conclusion that:

1) CPD for actors is far more widely recognised and more readily available in LA than in London
2) Acting coaching does not necessarily increase your employability as an actor
3) A mentor could be a great source of CPD in terms of helping to further an actor’s career
4) There is a major gap in the market for facilitating the transition period between university/college and employment for actors
5) Acting classes are more geared towards theatre work in London, and TV and film in LA.

The main benefit of my findings was to discover that I should perhaps concentrate on finding a mentor to help facilitate my career, rather than solely focussing on my acting training.

Google Docs

Google Docs is a free, Web-based word processor. It stores data and can be used to form spreadsheets, presentations, and forms. You can create new files and also download documents you have previously written on your computer and save them in your Google Docs. Google Docs allows you to continuously edit and save documents.

One of the major benefits of Google Docs is that you can invite others to share your work and even allow them to edit it if you so wish. If you want the documents to remain private you can opt out of sharing them. Another great feature of Google Docs is that it automatically saves your work every few seconds so if the computer crashes, your work is saved.

Throughout the report writing process I have found Google Docs to be invaluable. It has enabled me to store all my work in one place, which I can access on the internet from any computer anywhere in the world. It eliminates the need for a memory stick which isn’t always the most reliable way of storing your work as it can be easily misplaced or damaged.

I now use Google Docs to store other personal documents, such as my CV’s and photos. Having them all stored in one place makes it much easier for me to access them quickly and from any computer. As I don’t always carry my memory stick with me, I could use Google Docs to access my CV and then print it out at a printing shop, if I was called in to an audition with just an hours notice.

Delicious

When I discovered that part of the course required me to use Delicious (a social bookmarking web service founded by Joshua Schachter in 2003, acquired by Yahoo! In 2005), I was at first reluctant. I had no previous experience of using Delicious or any similar programs and knew nothing about it. However, once I visited the homepage, I soon found it would be a very useful tool and that it was easy to use.

The major benefit of using Delicious is that I could share my resources with other people on the site, and likewise I could use other people’s findings to help me develop a broader repertoire of knowledge on certain subjects relevant to my investigation. Using “Tags” organises and clearly labels the topics covered in each posting. For example, I read an article in Equity Magazine which contained an interview with the artistic director of the Actors Centre, and so I added Tags to the article such as, Equity, acting, Actors Centre, CPD, acting classes. Then when someone searched for any of the topics covered in the Tags, it would direct them to the article.

I wish I had known about Delicious in the first module so that I could have utilised this programme throughout my research over the past year. I would suggest that all first year students begin using it immediately. I find it extremely useful to look at my list of resources on Delicious regularly to remind myself of relevant articles I found a while ago which I may have forgotten about.

I intend to use Delicious for personal use once I have finished the course, to keep a record of useful resources which I find on the internet. These may be job recruitment websites, information about acting classes, interesting articles on careers, etc. Delicious will then enable me to discover other related information through the network of other Delicious users who choose to share their findings on the website.
