The campus session on 03/03/2010 was extremely informative and gave me a detailed insight into planning a research project, including the different types of research methods available.
Prior to the session I had a tutorial to discuss my project ideas face-to-face with my tutor. The one aspect of this course I struggle with is not being able to discuss ideas in person with my peers and tutors as regularly as I would like. Personally I find it easiest to identify problems and come up with new ideas by voicing my thoughts out loud, as opposed to writing them down.
After the first campus session on 16/02/2010 I realised I needed to expand my ideas for research topics by first thinking creatively rather than practically. This meant undertaking extensive secondary research in order to know which of my ideas would best develop into a research project followed by thinking about the practicalities of carrying out primary research into that topic.
I brainstormed numerous ideas for both the topics I am particularly interested in - acting techniques and Oscar winning actors. Whilst discussing ideas regarding these topics I realised they encompass the same one topic – continuous professional learning for actors – and so this is the angle I intend my research project to take.
I will detail my ideas on the blog, enabling me to engage in discussions with other people in the entertainment industry who will also look at the project from an academic point of view. It will hopefully prove both useful and insightful to have the opinions of my peers as this would then give me the potential to structure a debate on the subject as well as providing primary research for the project.
